No that is not a typo. We are talking about the Playstation dos here. After a stellar 13 year life cycle, it was revealed that the final nail in the coffin would be FIFA 14. As A lot of you may already know, Sony announced back in January that production would cease and the PS2 would be discontinued. But after selling more then 155 million units (which makes it the highest selling video game console to date) and 1.52 billion games moved later, the system would finally get the rest it rightfully deserves.(R.I.P my old friend)
Sony‘s Playstation 2 is what finally pried my hands away from Nintendo, which had one hell of a death grip on me. And they opened my eyes to a whole new realm of gaming. (and the wonderful use of discs) I would have liked to see a better title as this great systems grand finale, But for the majority FIFA will suffice. In fact there is a long running history with EA games producing the final frontier for a dying system. For the Playstation 1, It’s last hurrah was FIFA Football 2005. while Madden NFL ’08 was the last to hit the shelves for the Nintendo Gamecube. EA seems to be the gaming worlds equivalent to the Angel Of Death. They swoop in and apply “the kiss” to end the consoles misery and whisk it off to the promised land. (A land where dust and overheating are not known. And where the FPSer shall lay peacefully with the RPGer)
But if you take this as a sign of “out with the old and in with the new” (to which i’d say you’re a little late on that one) I would think twice before attempting to trade in those classics. Because Gamestop no longer accepts PS2 game trade-ins as of June 1st. (not like that $1.50 trade helped all that much anyway)
The Playstation 2 is widely considered to be one of (if not) the best gaming consoles of all time. It will always hold a special place in gamers hearts around the world (including mine) Countless hours were spent and whole summers wasted. (who needs friends?) So please fly your gaming flags to half mast and have a moment of silence for our fallen comrade.
Adios amigo….. Adios.
